St.Gregorios

The Great saint H. G.Geevarghese Mar Gregorios Metropolitan who is being entombed in Parumala is the most reverential and the only declared Saint of Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church. Thirumeni had been leading a saintly life right from childhood itself, so it will be much useful for the present day youth to follow his footsteps and seek His Grace’s intercession. His Grace has been popularly known as ‘Parumala Kochu Thirumeni’. His Grace was born on June 15 1848, in 'Mulan thuruthy'. Parents were Kochumatthai and Mariam. ‘Kochaippora’ was the pet name of His Grace. Kurienxand and Varkey were His Grace's brothers and Eli and Mariam were the sisters of His Grace.
Right from his childhood luxury items did not find a place in the hearts of Geevarghese; instead he devoted much time in meditation, Bible reading, etc. reading the stories of great Saints and great martyrs was taken with great interest. Right from his childhood fasting, lent etc were being observed with great devotion. He was always in the first place in the matter of studies and possessed great qualities like respect for teachers, humility, obedience,he was exemplified by the co-students. Always doing good activities was seen right from his childhood. After the formal education, the child was brought under the training of Geevarghese Malppan. Impressed by the child’s interest in Spiritual activities, humbleness, God’s fear, obedience. He was raised to the 1st stage of priesthood i.e. Korooyo on September 14 1858 at ‘Karinggarra’ church by H. G. Mathews Mar Athanasios, Metropolitan. Mar Anthonios of Egypt was his role model. He was a rich man, but gave away all his riches to poor. So following his foot steps, being a vicar of a Church, Geevarghese left all the luxury and chose ‘Vattickkal’ church which had been abandoned for many years, but it was much suitable for him to devote much of his time in prayers and fasting. But after some time the fame of this supreme devote reached the surrounding areas and many people brought offerings and sought his blessings. His prayers had the power to do wonders. In short period, this place became a spot of pilgrimage. On April 7, 1872 Mar Dionysias Metropolitian has ordained Geevarghese as ‘Ramban’.

During the Lent time he used to fast up to 22:30 hrs. after that also ,only a small refreshment could revive his spirit. He used to tie his abdomen and stomach, and this mark could be seen on his body. However tired he may be he used to conduct prayers at right time. He never took any treatment for any diseases; because he firmly believed that without the knowledge of God nothing happens. As he used to spend maximum time in prayers and meditation visitors who came to see him often went disappointed without seeing him. He was not only a role model to our church but also the people of other faith. On December 10, 1876, Geevarghese Ramban was made the Metropolitan by ‘Patriarch Bava’ with the name of ‘Mar Gregorios’ and entrusted the Niranam Diocese, at the age of 29. He was the youngest of all Metropolitan, so he was also called ‘Kochu Thirumeni’.
On the day of ‘Feast of St. Mary’ 1895, the Parumala church was consecrated by ‘Kochu Thirmeni’ in the presence of Mar Divanasios Metropolitan in the name of St. Paul and St. Peter. Both the altar was in the of St.Mary and St. Thomas. From the history of Malankara Church the first Metropolitan to visit ‘Holy Land’ was ‘Parumala Kochu Thirumeni’ in 1895. As Thirumeni didn’t care for his body his health began to deteriorate, and on 1902. He finally passed away to his heavenly abode, intersecting for us to God. On November 2nd 1947 his 45th Death anniversary ‘Parumala Mar Gregorios Metropolitan’ was declared as a Saint by His Holiness Moran Mar Baselios Geevarghese II in the Malankara Church Synod. After that many Churches, Schools, Institutes, Hospitals, Organizations etc were established on his name and also in the ‘Thubden’ His Grace is remembered. Daniel prophet’s books sayings as 12:3 Those who are wise will shine like brightness of the heavens, and those who lead many to righteousness, like the stars for ever and ever.
